The Weather Outside is Frightful! - Blogged by JME

Earlier this month the weather reports told us we were going to have a blizzard. Everyone took the warning seriously and went to Walmart to get lanterns and heaters. Banks closed early and other employers let their employees leave early to get a head start home and hopefully beat the dreaded blizzard. The drive home was a little scary because it was hard to see, but it wasn't horrible. N8 and I even got all bundled up in our winter gear and went tromping through the storm. . . .

We even made snow angels . . . .

It really wasn't much of a blizzard. We were a little disappointed at the amount of snow we got. There really wasn't much. Tonight, however, is more like a blizzard. It dumped on us today. Earlier we had really wet heavy snow. Snow pants and snow boots didn't really cut it. A scooba diver's wet suit would have probably been more appropriate. Around 3 p.m. today when it looked like the snow was finally going to stop, down came more, but this time it was the real stuff, not the slushy stuff. I think tonight is a good night to stay indoors!

Thanksgiving - Blogged by N8

I just wanted to post about the things I am grateful for. I feel that since the commercialization of Christmas has gotten so out of hand, most of us don't stop to really look at the purpose of this holiday.

I am thankful for the freedoms I have. I am thankful that I have the right to question authority and the decisions that are made for my behalf. I am thankful that there are still people in this world with enough honor to lay down their lives to support that freedom. I am thankful for a loving God and a Savior who made it possible to return to their presence. I am thankful for a loving wife and family who have been so much support to me. I am thankful for not one, but two methods that I have been blessed with to support myself and my family especially during these though economic times. I am thankful for beautiful music, good food, the beautiful scenery of my home state, a soft bed, and the smells of this season which all remind me that I have a body that works the way it should. I am grateful for a healthy body and that I have been blessed with the ability to work, play, and rest normally. Above all, I am grateful that God has blessed me with my agency and the ability to make all of my decisions for myself.

I hope that this Thanksgiving finds everyone happy, safe, well-fed, and with people that they love.

Busy October - Blogged by JME

We apologize for being so behind on our blog. It's almost Thanksgiving and we haven't really blogged about a whole lot of things that have happened since August. With finishing school and N8 training for his mini-triathlon, it is amazing we find time to do what we do.

October was a busy month for us. To kick off the fall season, N8 and I went on a beautiful hike with his Aunt A, Uncle M, and their son. Because of our work schedules, we had a late start and when we got to the top where the waterfall was, it was almost dark. On the way down, we got a little lost but finally made it back safe and sound. It was a lot of fun and N8 was able to use his amazing photography skills and took some great pictures (will be posted on our Thanksgiving post.

My sister also got married early in October. We took a road trip down south for the wedding. It was close to where N8's grandpa lives, so we took advantage of the opportunity to see him. We had a really nice time. We played 'Greedy' and grilled up some steaks. While we were outside grilling, a friendly lizard stopped by to watch us. It was a fun trip and, as always, had a great time with Grandpa.

N8 and I had a couple of opportunities to do things to get us in the Halloween Spirit. First, the GIS (Ghost Investigation Society) came to our local library to do a presentation. We were able to see some of the images that they took with infrared video cameras and listen to sound clips taken with EVPs. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, this was very interesting and spooky and fun to do to kick off the Halloween season.

Later in the month, N8's Uncle L and Aunt D took us to dinner and to see the dance performance 'Thriller.' It was such a great show and we would definitely recommend it to anyone. There were zombie people walking around before the performance, during intermission, and after the performance. They were pretty creepy. Aunt D was creeped out more than anyone and that was pretty funny to watch. The show was so entertaining and the talent we saw was incredible. We had a really good time doubling with the two of them and it will be something we will always remember.

We also went to our ward's trunk or treat. We were kind of bummed because we thought it started at 6:30. By the time N8 and I got off work, went home, and got all dressed up, it was 6:45. We thought we were only about 15 minutes late. To our disappointment, the trunk or treat started at 6, so we were almost an hour late and missed all the chili. We, however, did get there in time to pass out candy and got our picture taken.

Photobucket

I read Bram Stoker's Dracula last spring semester for my English class, and so the day before Halloween N8 took me to see the play. It was really well done and was so fun to see after reading the book.

We carved pumpkins for Halloween. I entered mine into a pumpkin carving contest at work and won 2nd place. I got a gift certificate to Applebee's for my prize!!! N8 carved the one that looks like Jack Skelington and I did the Slimer looking one.

We also cooked and pureed pumpkin for homemade pumpkin pie. We heard that blue hubbard makes excellent pumpkin pie, so we will be trying that out this year too.

We also enjoyed a beautiful rainbow the day before Halloween. We sure got a lot of those this year but I think this was the last one of this season.

Patriotic Employer - Blogged by N8

Shortly after returning home. I wanted to recognize my civilian employer for their support for myself and my family while I was gone. So, I put together a framed award with a German license plate, a couple of military coins, and an engraved presentation award.

I dressed in my dress whites and presented it to them at the City Council Meeting.

It was really neat standing in front of the mayor and everyone. I got a little choked up during my presentation, but still managed to hold it together. It was a neat experience.

Afterwords, I was interviewed by a lady from the newspaper. A couple weeks later, a story about me turned up. It was cool to see.

Adventures at Night – Blogged by JME

It is amazing the dreams people have, and how real they may seem. Sometimes our dreams don’t stay in the boundaries that have been set inside our heads but spill into real life resulting in talking, crying, or walking while we are still slumbering. Casual onlookers may become confused, or even laugh at the funny, nonsensical things we say when we are under the power of sleep. N8 and I have continued to share moments like these since we were first married. We’ve even had conversations with one another while we are both in the middle of dreaming.

Last night, for example, while I was in the middle of dreaming, N8 started pushing me and urgently saying, “Get up, get up.” I immediately obeyed and got out of bed. I was pretty out of it, but I stood next to the bed watching N8 pat around the mattress as if he were looking for something. Then he got up and walked over to the light switch. He switched on the light, looked at the bed and around the room, then looked at me with a very confused expression on his face and asked, “Why are we out of bed?” Reality crept into our minds as we realized that it was all part of his dream. Laughing, N8 told me how he was dreaming that we were standing on ice that was too thin to hold us up. We had a Halloween display that was on the ice as well that was going to fall in. Luckily, N8 pushed me off the ice (bed) in time. I’m not sure if he saved the Halloween display though.

N8 and I never know what we are going to get when we go to bed. One night, shortly after we were first married, we had our first experience with sleep talking. We had gone to bed with a lot on our minds. We were facing some of our first challenges with being married. I didn’t fall asleep right away because there was so much on my mind, but N8 was sawing logs before his head hit the pillow. As he slept, he dreamt that we were on the cruise ship we were on for our honeymoon. We were on the top deck surrounded by everyone’s luggage. In his dream (and in reality) he put his arm around me and said, “How are we going to get around this?” I heard him say this and thought he was talking about the challenges at hand, so I snuggled up to him and said, “Do you want to talk about it?” Meanwhile, in the dream, N8 got really frustrated about the luggage that was in the way. In discouragement he said, “Oh. . . just forget about it!” and (in reality) rolled over in the other direction. I started to cry, which woke up a confused new husband who was not quite sure why I was in tears. At the time it wasn’t so funny, but now we laugh about it.

Another time, N8 had been playing a PS2 game called, “Simpson’s Hit and Run.” In the game there is a black van that parks across the street from the Simpson’s home and spies on the Simpsons. One night after playing the game, I was awakened by N8 telling me that there was a black van in our driveway. Scared, I asked N8 if we remembered to lock the front door. He got up, went down stairs, checked to make sure the door was locked, and came back to bed. The following was our conversation as he crawled back under the covers:
“Is it still there?” I said.
“Is what still there?”
“The black van.”
He gave me a funny look and asked, “What black van?”
“You just told me there was a black van in the driveway!”
“Well, how was I supposed to know that?!”

We’ve had many other adventures besides melting ice and black vans. One night I was awakened by N8 taking all of the covers off the bed, wrapping them around his shoulders, and marching down the hall toward the entry way. When he returned I asked where he was going. “I thought the house was on fire.” If our house ever started on fire, at least we know the blankets would be saved.

N8 also will forget who I am at night. He will wake up feeling like he is in so much trouble because he is in bed with a strange lady. This happens frequently. It cracks me up. Once, N8’s mom flew all us out to Disneyland. N8’s sister Pookie spent one of the nights with us in our hotel room because we had two queen beds. She had the special experience of witnessing one of these occasions where N8 was not sure about who he was in bed with. It was pretty funny.

Dreams can be pretty crazy things. They can dwell with you throughout the day or you may forget your dream in an instant. They may feel as real as real life or be just as good as any action packed movie. Over the years we’ve gotten used to the sleep walking/talking. We just figure that since we are married and share everything with each other, we might as well share our dreams too.

Road Trip - Blogged by JME

N8 and I took a fun road trip to Casper, Wyoming to see one of his favorite bands
(Shinedown) play in the Carnival of Madness Tour. On the way there, we stopped at Independence Rock.

Independence Rock is a large granite rock, approximately 130 feet high. It is close to the highway and hard to miss. This rock is important in our church history. It was a prominent land mark during the middle of the 19th century on the Oregon, Mormon, and California emigrant trails. During the period of westward emigration on the trail (from 1843 to 1869), it was common for emigrants to carve their names in the granite rock, especially near the summit. Many instances of such carved graffiti are visible today at the summit of the rock, which is accessible by an easy free climb up the surface of the rock.

N8 and I climbed to the summit to look at the names, and close to the top, I caught sight of a jack rabbit that had climbed up there. It scurried under a rock before I could get a picture, but it was still pretty cool to see.

Then, on the way home, N8 and I stopped at Martin's Cove. We couldn't stay very long. Just long enough to use the very nice facilities and take a few pictures.

This picture is a land mark close to Martin's Cove called Devil's Gate.

Martin’s Cove received its name when, in November 1956, about 500 Mormon emigrants in the Martin Handcart Company were halted for five days in the Cove by snow and cold while on their way to settle in Salt Lake City. The Martin Handcart company had begun its journey on July 28, 1856, which was dangerously late in the season. Although the number who died in the Cove is unknown, more than 145 members of the Martin Company died before reaching SLC. A few days prior to their arrival at Martin’s Cove, the company was met by a small rescue party with food, supplies, and wagons that President Brigham Young had sent from SLC, Utah. On November 4, the company and rescuers forded the bitterly cold Sweetwater River and sought shelter in the cove. That evening a powerful north wind blew the tents to the ground. The tents were set up again, but a blizzard brought heavy snow. The company remained in the camp for five days, unable to proceed due to the snow and cold. When the weather warmed, the company was able to move on toward Utah. With assistance from the original rescue party and from additional rescue parties that met them along the way, the survivors finally reached SLC on November 30.

I've been to both Independence Rock and Martin's Cove a couple times before, but N8 has never been. It was really cool to see both of those places with him and share some of our church's history together.

A Day at the Lake - Blogged by JME

Back in August, shortly after N8 came home, my mom and dad took us on a little day trip to Bloomington Lake. It was such a nice trip and we really enjoyed the time we spent with my parents. The lake was beautiful but freezing cold! I'm not really sure about the details of Bloomington Lake. I've heard it is glazier water and that is why it is so cold. I've also heard it is a dormant volcano.

Aren't my parents so cute?!?

We brought our lunch up there with us and had a picnic in the parking lot, then hiked a little ways in to get to the actual lake. We sat and watched people cliff dive. It looked fun, but too cold for me. We did, however, take our shoes off and wade in the water a little bit.

It was really relaxing. While we were watching the cliff divers, I felt like I had something stinging me on the back of my arm. I thought it could be a wasp or bee, but it didn't hurt as bad as something like that. I got up and did a little 'freakout' dance, smacking the area that I felt the sting, right in front of N8 and my parents . . . and every other person up there. It was pretty embarrassing, but when I finally knocked the little insect off of me and saw what it was, I knew it was worth the dance.

Pretty creepy, huh?! It gives me the heebee geebees just looking at it.

On our way home, we stopped at Bear Lake and N8 and I got a famous Bear Lake raspberry shake. It was delicious! It was a really nice trip and we really enjoyed spending time with my parents.

Carnival of Madness - Blogged by N8

So, when I was in Germany I got to see Shinedown in concert in Frankfurt. Shortly before I came home, I saw that they were going to be headlining a festival tour called the "Carnival of Madness" after I came home. I begged and begged JME if we could go after I got home and she finally told me that we could. Unfortunately, the closest they were coming to O-Town was Casper, WY, so we had to make a road trip.

We left early in the morning and drove about seven hours to the small town of Casper. Why they chose to hold a huge festival concert in such a small town and completely pass SLC is beyond me. Anyway, we got settled in our hotel, grabbed a delicious meal at a local Mexican restaurant and we headed up to the Casper Events Center.

We got there and they separated the lines into male and female so that they could search us before going inside. A few guys were standing behind us in line and they were talking to every event worker that walked past and calling them by their first names. One of them walked up to them and asked them to huddle up close. So, they all started whispering and I heard the event worker say that they were giving away pink wristbands to the first 200 people that bought a Shinedown CD that would get them to a meet and greet after the show. So, the second I made it through the security guards, I ran to the nearest souvenir stand and bought 2 CD's for us. Along with that came 2 wristbands to meet SHINEDOWN!

Opening the show was the Knoxville, TN band Ten Years. They are known for such songs as Wasteland, So Long Goodbye, and Beautiful.

After them was Sevendust, a group from Atlanta, GA. I have seen them before. They are known for a pretty wild stage show. They are famous for such songs as Angel's Son, Denial, and Enemy.

After them was Puddle of Mudd from Kansas City, MO. I've seen them before also. They are known for such songs as Blurry, Psycho, and She Hates Me.

After that came Chevelle. They are from Chicago, IL. I was really impressed by them. They put on a great show. They are known for such songs as Vitamin R (Leading Us Along), The Clincher, and The Red.

After that came the main attraction, SHINEDOWN! They are from Jacksonville, FL. This was the 5th time I've seen them. What an amazing show they put on! Their set list, which I wrote down as they went a long, went like this: Sound of Madness, Devour, I Dare You, Cyanide Sweet Tooth Suicide, If You Only Knew, Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom), 45, Burning Bright, Heroes, The Crow and the Butterfly, Her Name Is Alice, Save Me, Left Out, Simple Man, Fly From the Inside, and Second Chance. It was an amazing show with a lot of visual effects on jumbo screens everywhere and great music. Their singer Brent always does a great job of firing up the audience and getting everyone into the show. It was a lot of fun!

After the show was over, we met up with the rest of the people with the pink wristbands where we were lined up to meet Shinedown. We were told that we couldn't take pictures with the band, but we could take pictures while we were waiting in line. Here are a couple that I snapped.

They were very friendly to both of us. They thanked me for my military service and signed the CD booklets and our tickets. In return, I presented Brent with the coin from the First and Second Class Petty Officer's Association at Landstuhl.

It was the best festival concert I have ever been to. It was a great way to celebrate coming home.
