Conference weekends are some of my favorite weekends of the whole year. They are almost like a holiday in our house and filled with tradition. We start the next work week feeling spiritually edified and closer to each other. Conference comes semi-annually, usually the first part of April and the first part of October.
When I was in seminary years ago, they taught us a lot of the Jewish traditions of the Passover from the bible. They taught us how to make unleavened bread (representing the bricks they would make when they were under Pharaoh's rule) and Haroset (representing the mortar used during that same time). It is actually really good and I kept the recipes and continued to make this around Easter or Passover. After awhile, I started making it for Conference weekends, so now I make it twice a year for the Saturday session of Conference and it has been our little family tradition ever since N8 and I got married.
| Dip the Unleavened Bread in the Haroset and Enjoy! |

*1 tsp. Salt
*2 Tbs. Sugar
*1/4 Cup Margarine or Butter
*1-1/2 Cups Milk
***Mix dry ingredients; cut in margarine (like pie crust). Add milk, pat out on greased cookie sheet or stone. Bake at 450 degrees for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cut in 2x2 squares.
Haroset
*1 Cup Walnuts (or Pecans)
*1 Apple (peeled and cored) Red Preferably
*3 Tbs. Apple Juice
*2 Tbs. Sugar
***Blend in a blender or food processor until smooth.
During the two-hour break between Conference Sessions on Saturday, N8 and I usually like to do something to stretch our legs. In the past, we've gotten together with Pookie and her girls and gone rollerblading or done something active. We hadn't made plans like that this Conference but woke up to a windy, warm day. It was beautiful! We decided that we would walk to the splash pad and try to fly our kites.
We were both able to get our kites up in the air, but it was hard at first. The wind was so shifty and a little too strong. We kept having nose dives and crash landings and it was pretty frustrating at first. In the end, we did enjoy ourselves and enjoyed the warm weather. We actually got a little sunburned in the process.
Our kites finally collided after about an hour flying them, and by then it was time to head back for our second session of Conference.
Windblown and ruffled, we started heading back.
Sunday was a nice Conference day as well. We went to my parent's for the morning session and came home for the final session. Normally, my mom and I like to make homemade cinnamon rolls for Conference but N8 is doing Lent this year and has been really good about staying away from sweets, so we decided to do something a bit more healthy. We made some really yummy waffles, eggs, orange juice, and turkey bacon instead. Mmmmm. . . . It was so good, we talked about doing that next time instead of the cinnamon rolls.
N8 and I got a lot out of Conference this time. The speakers focused a lot on families and we felt like the talks applied so much to both of us as a family, as well as individually. They inspired us to be better and to strive to be more Christlike. I personally have felt strengthened this week and have made an extra effort to serve those around me, especially at work, and to let go of grudges and forgive those who may have wronged me. It has also helped me to trust my Heavenly Father and be able to turn things over to Him that I cannot control. I know the talks that were shared were messages that God wanted us to hear to help us be more like him and to be happier in our lives everyday. I'm so grateful for the knowledge of a Savior and for the gospel in my life. It has definitely made a difference in who I am and how I treat my fellow men. I am a better person because of it and am happier in my life. I'm grateful for our living prophet, President Monson, and know that he is the voice of the Lord and a true and living prophet on the earth today.
Conference is available online to watch if you were not able to see it during the live broadcast. This link below will take you to the site where it can be viewed.
